The UO is particularly qualified to assist Gabon with the development of in-country English language programs. The American English Institute (AEI) has offered distance learning courses and programs to educators and students worldwide since 1996. Currently, AEI provides English training services for the U.S. Department of State as well as the Bureau of Education and the Cultural Affairs E-Teacher Scholarship Program, offering innovative online, graduate-level courses to English teaching professionals across the globe. In conjunction with U.S. embassies abroad, the AEI also provides professional development courses for English teachers in more than forty countries, including ten on the African continent.
The UO Department of Linguistics also welcomes up to twenty international students per year into its master’s degree program with a Language Teaching Specialization, an accelerated program focused on preparing leaders in international education and foreign language teaching.
AEI also provides English language training to all University of Oregon international students who need to improve their writing, speaking, and listening skills before beginning formal university studies.
The Gabon-Oregon Center has sponsored several English Teacher Training Workshops in Libreville for Gabonese teachers of English (April 2014 and April 2015) led by AEI expert trainers Dr. Deborah Healey and Dr. Keli Yerian.
